Winter walks

LA COLMENA FAMOSA

Why not give all your senses a real treat in a part of Spain that lies less than three hours’ flying time from nearly all European countries and yet remains almost unknown to many travellers.

Andalusia: an unbounded natural paradise! Discover the vast countryside with its beautiful valleys, hills and mountains. Beaches reviving you with their fresh air. From Nerja to Marbella (everything within an hour from our fine casa rural), along this part of the Mediterranean coast fantastic beaches enjoy the protection of majestic mountains, providing a unique microclimate. Three hundred and twenty-five days’ sunshine each year and an average seawater temperature of eighteen degrees allow us to receive visitors all year round. The remarkable hinterland of the Costa del Sol with its marvellous mountain landscape offers countless opportunities for walks through sweet-smelling fields. The historic villages, many of Moorish origin, with their typical architecture and narrow streets, provide a glimpse of a Spain where time seems to have lost its meaning. Where life appears to have been elevated to a fine art, bereft of all the hustle and bustle that can be all too familiar in our own daily lives.
La Colmena Famosa is a perfect combination of hotel, pension, holiday home or bed & breakfast, whatever you want it to be. We offer a warm welcome in the heart of Andalusia, where we look forward to receiving you with typical Dutch hospitality.

The Spanish name means ‘The famous beehive’. Beehive (colmena) because our house is always buzzing with activity. Then there is the name of our village, Colmenar, an authentic Spanish ‘white village’ (‘pueblo blanco’) with origins in the times of the Moors. Last but not least are hidden in FAMOsa the first letters of our surnames, namely FAber and MOonen. SA reflects the Dutch word SAmen, meaning together: that we are always there for each other.

Bed & breakfast and plenty to do: ‘La Colmena Famosa’

Enjoying fantastic views into the distance, right in the heart of the Andalusian countryside, between the villages Colmenar and Riogordo and at only 30 minutes from the coast and from Málaga Airport, you will find our Bed & Breakfast: ‘La Colmena Famosa’.

Who are we?

Klaasjan Faber (Enkhuizen, 1951) said farewell to his vocation in special education at the Institute for the Deaf (IVD) in Sint Michielsgestel, The Netherlands, after 33 years service. He was specialized in therapeutic music-making combined with logopaedic development and speech and language formation. For 20 years he was associated with the Fontys Educational Institute in Tilburg as a lecturer for the ‘special education’ training course, and for 16 years with the ‘international contacts’ department of the IVD. In 2005, just before his emigration to Spain, he gained his qualification as Spanish teacher. Hobbies include classical singing, cultural history and massage.

Jan Moonen (Nederweert, 1956) worked for more than 25 years as an estate agent for industrial properties. His dream was always to change direction as far as his (working) life was concerned, around his 50th. This dream has been fully realized with his emigration to Spain. He had had for a long time the idea of starting a bed & breakfast, and the recent change of life has also provided the opportunity for him to indulge fully in his hobbies: ceramic arts and cooking.
